A spandrel panel is the uppermost section of triangular-shaped stud framework at the gable/party wall. It is nailed directly into the party wall panel, head plate or into the top rail.
For additional strength and stability to the gable wall, spandrel panels or party wall panels, sheathing material can be added to the external face. Lateral restraint straps can also be used to stabilize the gable; these work by transmitting wind loads into the structure. Bracing timber may be required again to add further support should the roof-bracing timbers abut the party walls or the spandrel panels.
When fixing roof bracing members to the spandrel panel that forms part of the party wall in the attic space, fixing blocks should be fixed to at least two stud members after the two layers of plasterboard have been fixed.
